From the page: OpenStreetMap is a project aimed squarely at creating and providing free geographic data such as street maps to anyone who wants them. The project was started because most maps you think of as free actually have legal or technical restrictions on their use, holding back people from using them in creative, productive or unexpected ways.

This shows promise to being the biggest, most accurate mapping effort ever undertaken. It doesn't cover just streets, but also Railroads, Bike routes, walking paths, hiking trails, and just about every other method that man has devised to get from point A to point B, and all the places he stops at in between.

The best part of this will be its flexibility. Where you might wait for years for better maps to be created for your GPS, OSM maps are updated near-real-time - think days instead of years.

The project appears to be taking off quickly in Europe, but it's still in it's infancy here in the States.
